Don Martin

Return to nominations

Nominated for Category E: Lifetime Contribution to the Historic Environment by East Dunbartonshire Heritage and History Forum.

Don Martin has had a truly life-long commitment to documenting, studying and communicating Scotland’s heritage and history.  From the 1960s, Don photographed the passing eras of steam engines, puffers, local industries etc. and many of those images are now held digitally in East Dunbartonshire Libraries and used widely in publications. In the mid-1970s, he initiated and drove, for two decades, Strathkelvin District Libraries’ local history publications.

Don’s contribution has been honoured by the McCulla award (1994) and Honorary Membership of The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals Scotland (2005).  His contribution continues undiminished: Coordinating Editor, Scottish Local History; Vice-Chair of the Scottish Local History Forum; and Secretary to important regional heritage groups, including Friends of Thomas Muir, the ED Heritage & History Forum, the Kirkintilloch Society of Antiquaries, and Milngavie Heritage Centre.
