The Friends of Kinneil

Return to shortlist

Nominated for Category C: Sharing and Celebrating - Volunteer-led projects promoting local history, architecture and archaeology.

The Friends of Kinneil was set up to help promote and develop Kinneil Estate and Foreshore in Bo’ness.  In January of this year they led in orchestrating a high-profile event in the Scottish Parliament commemorating 250 years of James Watt’s condensing steam engine (developed at Kinneil).  Every year they organise Big Roman Week promoting the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site.  When the group started, none of the volunteers worked in heritage.  They have since learned about guiding, campaigning, charity work, events, health and safety issues and customer service (and lots of history!)
