Mark Cranston, Brickmarks

Return to shortlist

Nominated for Category A: Investigating and Recording - Volunteer/community-based projects recording local history and heritage.

Scottish Borders

Four years ago Mark carried out research on one humble brick name and was amazed at the amount of industrial and social history that was revealed. Mark decided to single-handedly pull together as much information on the Scottish brick Industry as possible and record this on his website. He has also pledged to locate and recover and record as many physical examples as possible and has now more than 2000 examples.  He is also collating where and which Scottish brickmarks have been located overseas and he receives a handful of emails every week from people all over the world who have found Scottish bricks, sometimes in their own back gardens.
