Scottish Waterways Trust - Canal College

Return to shortlist

Nominated for Category D: Capacity Building - Projects demonstrating sharing of skills with volunteers.

The 16-25 year old volunteers in the Canal College initiative undertook various tasks in built, cultural and natural heritage. Historic canalside structures were recorded, repaired and maintained.  Volunteers worked alongside archaeologists recording and digging exploratory excavation trenches. Transformation in many was remarkable – youngsters, some from difficult backgrounds, became skilled, motivated, confident, and more employable young people with a future.

All left with some degree of understanding of Scotland’s canal heritage.  Some subsequently secured jobs in the heritage sector.  Their efforts and enthusiasm raised the profile of canals throughout their local communities.
