Save the Wemyss Ancient Caves Society for Fife Council

First documented in the 1860s and studied by eminent antiquarians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Wemyss Caves are now suffering from a century of neglect. Since the establishment of the Save the Wemyss Ancient Caves Society in 1987 the volunteers have become experts in the history and archaeology of the caves; learnt advanced technical photographic skills for recording and monitoring the carvings; implemented a programme of outreach and education within the community and beyond; and helped coordinate and oversee a major digital heritage project. The Society has been instrumental in bringing the Wemyss Caves to national and international attention and of reinforcing their value to local pride and the local economy.
