Helmsdale Station Volunteers for Helmsdale Station House
The Helmsdale Station Project explores an imaginative and creative approach to bringing a redundant station building back into the life of the community. After successfully achieving grant funding the project attracted volunteers from across the country who achieved a complete building restoration. The new station combines passenger amenities, a photographic darkroom, and restored original platform features as well as providing donations to assist local community charitable causes.
Twenty one volunteers have contributed to the restoration including a carpenter, seamstresses, accountant, solicitor, architect, artist and photographer. Volunteers enjoyed working together with a common purpose to save a historic building and help an economically fragile community.
