Nominated for Category A: Investigating and Recording - Volunteer/community-based projects recording local history and heritage.

The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis is a volunteer run charity established in 2005. Bit by bit, they are completing a project whose aim is to provide a comprehensive record and archive of burials and monuments in the Glasgow Necropolis.  The cemetery is an extremely important part of Glasgow's heritage, with many of the city's most prominent citizens interred here. Sadly it has been neglected over the years, some records have been lost and memorials have been destroyed and broken due to vandalism or have lost their inscriptions and fallen because of stone decay. Volunteers have gained hands-on experience in fieldwork skills such as surveying and using GPRS equipment.   As the monuments decay, inscriptions are lost and so it is important that a digital record be produced and maintained for posterity.
